The new Aladdin trailer was premiered last night during the Annual Grammy Awards and a whole new live-action world awaits for fans of the Disney story.
The new live-action adaptation was directed by Guy Richie and stars Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott is Princess Jasmine, Menna Massoud will portray the title character of Aladdin, and Marwan Kenzari as the villainous Jafar.
After the release of the new Aladdin trailer we have 5 burning questions, we know other fans must have as well.
In the new Aladdin trailer, we get to see Aladdin’s pet pal, Abu sitting on his shoulder. We’re also given a quick glimpse of Rajah – Princess Jasmine’s beloved tiger. There’s also a shot of a street parade, with a big elephant, decorated with fabrics and jewels. Iago, Jafar’s feisty feathered friend briefly flies over the Arabian sky at the opening scene of the new Aladdin trailer.
Our biggest concern is that these will be real-life animals. As Jon Favreau recently showed with the 2016 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book, animals can be created perfectly using CSI. So, we hope that Guy Richie’s Aladdin follows suit, and doesn’t use real animals for the animal roles, because no one wants to see that in 2019 anymore.
Where’s The Magic Carpet?
The Magic Carpet is a favourite amongst fans of the 1996 animation movie. But this delightful enchanted mat hasn’t made so much as a swoosh appearance in the new Aladdin trailer. We’re sure (more like we’re using our three wishes, wishing) this iconic character will be in the new movie, but for now, it’s all shrouded in mystery.
The details surrounding the plot for the upcoming live-action adaptation are pretty thin right now. The new Aladdin trailer has a very general description:
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.
That seems to suggest that the upcoming movie, might follow a similar storyline to the 1996 animation. But, at this point, we just don’t know.
Weird Wardrobe Choices
We have to say that we were happy to see a blue Genie portrayed by Will Smith in the new Aladdin trailer.
The one thing that’s just a little weird in terms of the costume design, is that Aladdin is wearing a shirt under his vest, but Genie has a full open torso. We understand if Aladdin was made to look a little more modest for a younger audience, but then what about the Genie? As seen from other promotional material, the Genie does eventually do a bejeweled coat, but we still think making this distinction doesn’t make a lot of sense and, right now, it feels like it was a weird wardrobe decision, tbh.
The new Aladdin trailer does give us a good glimpse of all the major characters in the upcoming live-action adaptation. However, we are still waiting in anticipation to get a look at other supporting characters like Jasmine’s father, the Sultan (portrayed by Navid Negahban), or Billy Magnussen as Aladdin’s rival, Prince Anders. This raises another question – why did Guy Richie choose to cast a white actor to portray the role of what is suppose to be an Arabian prince?
Hopefully, these questions won’t just be left open, but will be answered when the movie releases in May 2019.
