Niantic Inc. is the creator behind a little mobile game you may have heard of called Pokemon GO. Pokemon GO is one of the most popular mobile games on the planet and continues to become better (and make Niantic more money). Now, there’s a new AR mobile game on the horizon from Niantic, called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
As these two mobile games come from the same creator, there are a few similarities that we’re going to breakdown. We’ll also list some of the unique features we’re excited to try out in Wizards Unite when it releases later this year for iOS and Android devices.
Real Location Based
Just like Pokemon GO has PokeStops and Gyms at real-life locations like museums, coffee shops, art, etc., Wizards Unite will have real-life locations to find on your map in the game, too. These are called Inns and Fortresses.
Inns are places located on your map where players in Wizards Unite can replenish their spell powers with food and drinks. Your spell powers get used up when you cast spells.
Fortresses are like Pokemon GO Gyms. Here players in Wizards Unite can battle in raids with up to five other players to take down dark magical creatures like Dementors and Death Eaters.
Just like you would catch Pokemon in real life using Pokemon GO’s AR technology, Wizards Unite will require players to find and cast spells to contain magical objects that have spilled into the Muggle world. These are called Foundables.
Certain Foundables are more likely to appear at some real-world locations (just like Pokemon GO and Pokemon) including parks, banks, municipal buildings, campuses, libraries, monuments, zoos, galleries, and more. You contain these Foundables by casting various types of spells and earn “unique rewards” for returning Foundables to the Wizarding World.
Just like Pokemon GO has three different teams players can join (and changeup now, by the way), Wizards Unite has three teams to choose to be part of, too. The teams in Wizards Unite are focused on magical professions and players will work towards building up their skills to reach the top of their professions. The three magical professions players can choose from are:
- Magizoologist, and
Players on the same teams in Wizards Unite are able to battle raids at Fortresses together, working out strategy and support as a team.
One of the unique features which players can look forward to trying out in Wizards Unite, include the new potions mechanism. Players can collect ingredients that appear on their map or can be located at special Greenhouses to brew potions to help them cast spells, contain and return Foundables and battle better in raids.
Players will be able to master different magical skills like casting different spells, dueling, and brewing potions. This is different to Pokemon GO where the gameplay mechanics are really simplified. Wizards Unite will involve a little more skills to gain, which we’re super excited to try out.
Wizards Unite will feature magical content and characters from the Harry Potter franchise, which was created by J.K. Rowling, as well as the new Fantastic Beasts movies.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is set to be released later this year for iOS and Android devices.
