It’s been 11 years in the making, with the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -Iron Man – to follow the Avengers storyline premiering in 2008. Since then, there have been 22 MCU movies, which includes the brand new, and final chapter in phase three of the MCU, Avengers: Endgame.
The first thing you need to know about Endgame is that it has a 3-hour running time and it’s jam-packed full of action, adventure, and emotion. You would think there would at least be a few lulls during the three hours, but that wasn’t the case with this Marvel movie. It felt like almost every second was important and it’s hard to even see where anyone would imagine a bathroom break. So prepare yourself.
Avengers: Endgame picks up where Infinity War and the end-credit scene in Captain Marvel left off. Thanos (portrayed by Josh Brolin) has become inevitable and has wiped out half of all living creatures in the entire universe. The remaining Avengers are finding it hard to deal with the loss, and mourn with the rest of the world for everyone they have lost. Those who remain, which includes, Black Widow (portrayed by Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (portrayed by Jeremy Renner), Iron Man (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.), Bruce Banner aka The Hulk (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo), Thor (portrayed by Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (portrayed by Chris Evans) and Captain Marvel (portrayed by Brie Larson), are trying to either still figure out how to reverse Thanos’s snap, or how to live in the new world. Everyone has their own sense of loss and their own way of dealing with it. Some Avengers really let themselves go though, so we see these changes too. The performances from each of the actresses and actors in the movie are beyond brilliant, and you can see they’re living the Endgame reality as much as the audience is. The amazing cast make you really believe that it’s all real, bringing to life real movie magic. They also all look so great, so a special mention has to go out to the costume designers and the hair and makeup artists for creating these magical Marvel creatures.
Endgame is a thrilling ride in terms of story details. It has a great plot, and the perfect ending to the MCU phase 3. Everything seems to come together brilliantly. However, if you haven’t watched any of the previous 21 movies, then a lot of the plot details will be lost on you, as Endgame draws on many parts of the Marvel story that’s been told by previous movies. It’s highly recommended that you watch at least some of them before you dive into Endgame, otherwise, the story will be very hard to completely grasp and enjoy. But fans of the franchise will be right on board and will be treated to some awesome flashbacks to previous movies, but from a different perspective, making it feel like a unique experience and a way to really geek out.
Although the movie is extremely emotional (you’ll probably cry and ask someone for a hug after), it also has a lot of fun in it. The jokes are hilarious and fans will love the references and the inside jokes. The action and adventure in Endgame is beyond brilliant and you’ll be hanging on the edge of your seat and pulling out your hair for many parts of the movie. The final showdown is what Avengers fans live for, so just know you’re in for a CGI-filled treat, action fans.
Avengers: Endgame is one of the best, if not the best, movie in the MCU. It is a beautiful and extremely entertaining ending to a story 11 years in the making. Fans of the franchise will particularly love this one, and you’re probably going to want to watch it more than once on the big screen to experience it in all its marvellous glory.
Avengers: Endgame premiers on 26 April 2019.
