The new regulations will require porn sites to institute blocks for UK users, to verify that they are 18 years of age or older. The UK porn block will require sites to verify users’ age via identity documents like passports, drivers’ licenses, or credit cards. People will also be able to buy porn passes for £4.99. The British Board of Film Classification will be responsible for identifying which sites qualify as commercial porn sites, and will then require these to institute UK porn blocks.

Porn sites that fail to comply to institute age verification blocks for UK users face having the sites blocked by Internet Service Providers in the UK.

The new regulations have been critised for being easily bypassable through using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which routes internet traffic through another country to bypass such restrictions as the planned UK porn block. Furthermore, social media sites like Twitter and Reddit are not covered by the new UK regulation, and these, along with other sites, host plenty of adult content.

The government believes that the UK porn block will restrict underage users from viewing adult content, with the Minister for Digital, Margot James saying that

The introduction of mandatory age-verification is a world-first, and we’ve taken the time to balance privacy concerns with the need to protect children from inappropriate content. We want the UK to be the safest place in the world to be online, and these new laws will help us achieve this.
