Pokémon Detective Pikachu could possibly be classed as one of the best video game live-action movie adaptations in a long time, if not ever. The movie takes the popular Pokémon franchise and pays beautiful homage to it, while being something new (especially younger) fans will flock to.

Justice Smith portrays the role of Tim Goodman – a young man who lives in a world where Pokémon are real and either live in the wild, or live among humans in Rhyme City. He finds out that his detective father has died. When he travels to Rhyme City to clear out his father’s apartment, he meets a talking Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds). The two go on a wonderful and highly entertaining adventure to uncover a few mysteries, including what really happened to Tim’s father. Along the journey, Tim and Pikachu meet Lucy Stevens (portrayed by Kathryn Newton) and her Pokémon, Psyduck.

Justice Smith’s performance as Tim was really awesome and his shy comedic moments shine on screen. He’s a very likable and relatable character and it’s great to watch his journey throughout the movie. Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the title character is as awesome as you’d think. He is funny (duh), but he also managed to come across as incredibly sweet and cute as arguably the most famous Pokémon of them all. Kathryn Newton was also a great member of the cast, who is extremely entertaining thanks to her cute quirks and her confidence is infectious.

Rhyme City is the fictional city every Pokémon fan has been dreaming of for years. The entire city is filled to the brim with Pokémon who live and work amongst humans. Rhyme City will make you want to pause and take everything in, with a ton of Easter eggs for fans to find. There are so many references to the popular franchise, that die heart fans will probably want to watch Pokémon Detective Pikachu a few times to make sure they spotted them all.

The Pokémon are the real stars of Pokémon Detective Pikachu. If you thought that these creatures were cute, wait until you see them meticulously brought to life in live-action glory. The attention to detail is insane, and the Pokémon really appear to be real. Some of the classic characters from the franchise make appearances in the movie and they look brilliant and absolutely adorable, of course.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is one of the best video game movie adaptations you’ll watch in a long time. It’s the perfect live-action tribute to a franchise that’s been going strong for close to three decades now. Fans will love the movie and all of its wonderful references to the Pokémon world. But the movie is fun enough, and explains things well enough, to draw in a new generation of fans. It might be a little cheesy at times, but it wouldn’t be a Pokémon movie otherwise. It’s definitely one to enjoy with your entire family.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu releases in South Africa on 17 May 2019. Don’t forget to take advantage of the Detective Pikachu event currently underway in Pokémon GO until 17 May.
