Lana Wachowski, one of the Wachowski siblings behind the first three Matrix movies, has co-written the script and will be directing The Matrix 4 (title not confirmed). Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell also helped pen the script.

Many of the ideas Lilly [Wachowski] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.

What’s even more exciting, is that original cast members, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their iconic roles of Neo and Trinity, which they first portrayed in the 1999 smash-hit, The Matrix. The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions followed in 2003.

The Matrix 4

It seemed like the popular franchise might have ended with the third movie, but now it’s been officially confirmed that The Matrix 4 is happening. The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich, who stated that

We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.

Warner Bros. has apparently been trying for some time to get The Matrix 4 off the ground, and plans to start production in 2020.

Not only is The Matrix franchise a pop culture phenomenon, which changed the game in terms of CGI capabilities in film, the three previous movies have been extremely lucrative, collectively earning more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.
